The city hosts one of the top professional tennis tournaments, the Indian Wells Masters—now known by its current sponsorship name of BNP Paribas Open . It is one of nine tournaments in the Masters 1000 of high-level events operated by the Association of Tennis Professionals. The event is held in the 16,100-seat stadium of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Demographics

he 2010 United States Census reported that Indian Wells had a population of 4,958. The population density was 339.8 people per square mile.

The Census reported that 4,952 people (99.9% of the population) lived in households, 6 (0.1%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 0 (0%) were institutionalized.

There were 2,745 households, out of which 193 (7.0%) had children under the age of 18 living in them, 1,519 (55.3%) were opposite-sex married couples living together, 85 (3.1%) had a female householder with no husband present, 46 (1.7%) had a male householder with no wife present. There were 85 (3.1%) unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, and 36 (1.3%) same-sex married couples or partnerships. 944 households (34.4%) were made up of individuals and 690 (25.1%) had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.80. There were 1,650 families (60.1% of all households); the average family size was 2.22.

The population was spread out with 310 people (6.3%) under the age of 18, 76 people (1.5%) aged 18 to 24, 283 people (5.7%) aged 25 to 44, 1,558 people (31.4%) aged 45 to 64, and 2,731 people (55.1%) who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 66.7 years. For every 100 females there were 84.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.

There were 5,137 housing units at an average density of 352.1 per square mile (135.9/km²), of which 2,285 (83.2%) were owner-occupied, and 460 (16.8%) were occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 5.1%; the rental vacancy rate was 15.4%. 4,251 people (85.7% of the population) lived in owner-occupied housing units and 701 people (14.1%) lived in rental housing units.

Geography and climate

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.4 square miles (34.7 km²), of which, 13.2 square miles of it is land and 0.2 square miles of it (1.19%) is water.

Indian Wells, located on the western slopes of the Coachella Valley, is sheltered by the San Bernardino Mountains to the north, the Santa Rosa Mountains to the south, by the San Jacinto Mountains to the west and by the Little San Bernardino Mountains to the east. The surrounding geography gives Indian Wells its hot, dry climate, with 354 days of sunshine and less than 6 inches (150 mm) of rain annually. Winter temperatures average in the 70s with nights in the mid 40s, but the dry desert heat of summer pushes daytime temperatures well above 100, with overnight temperatures in the mid-to-upper 70s.
Average seasonal temperatures range from a high of 71 and low of 42 in January to a high of 107 and low of 78 in July.

Indian Wells Tennis Garden

The Indian Wells Tennis Garden is a tennis facility in Indian Wells, California, in the Coachella Valley. It is the home of the Indian Wells Masters tournament, a.k.a. the BNP Paribas Open (previously the Pacific Life Open), a joint event of the ATP World Tour and the WTA Tour which constitutes the fifth largest tournament in the world. Indian Wells Tennis Garden also hosts the junior and adult USTA events year round. Members are able to use the courts for recreational play during the week. The tennis garden sets up matches for individuals who want to play. Tennis clinics and professional instructors are available for a fee.

The  $77 million facility was built in March 2000 and was designed by Rossetti Associates Architects. It includes a 16,100-seat Stadium court, 11 match courts, 6 practice courts, and 2 Har-Tru clay courts on 88 acres.This is the s second largest tennis-specific stadium in the world.

As well as tennis, the venue has hosted concerts by artists such as The Eagles, The Who, Tom Petty, Andrea Bocelli, and RBD.

The NBA has played three pre-season exhibition games at Indian Wells, with all these events involving the Phoenix Suns. The first game featured the Suns against the Denver Nuggets on October 11, 2008; the NBA’s first outdoor game since September 1972. On October 10, 2009 the Suns played the Golden State Warriors and on October 9, 2010 the game featured the Suns and the Dallas Mavericks.

Nearby Palm Desert is home to CSU San Bernardino at Palm Desert, CA and The College Of The Desert.  Both schools are well recognized for their curriculum that are useful for continuing and degree education and schools for the trades.

Nearby in Palm Springs is Desert Regional Medical Center.  In Rancho Mirage is Eisenhower Medical Center along with the Betty Ford Clinic and the Lucy Curci Cancer Center.  Additionally Eisenhower has medical clinics around the desert including one in Cathedral City.
